Three Things You Should Know About Your Atheist Neighbour
Posted by RZIM Canada on March 23, 2017
You may have a co-worker, friend, or family member who doesn’t believe in God. How can we positively engage with our atheist neighbours about the gospel? Here are three things to keep in mind before starting that conversation:
1. Atheists are People Too
People of faith often view atheists as adversaries. But atheism is simply a lens through which people see the world. Understanding atheism is the first step to responding to individuals who adhere to its claims.
2. Many Atheists are Sincere and Thoughtful
Conceding that people who hold differing opinions may have a good reason for doing so isn’t easy. Some might assume that one’s lack of belief is due to a lack of thinking. We all need our assumptions and ideas challenged.
3. The Gospel can Change Anyone
One only has to look to the brilliant C.S. Lewis, who was a staunch atheist. He had no apparent need for God and found many reasons why the idea of God just didn’t work. But through the encouragement of Christians who were in close proximity to him, he began his slow journey towards a vibrant faith in Christ. Some have simply never heard that there is a God who loves them.
